Provided are a contact device and an electromagnetic switch using said contact device that are capable of easily extinguishing an arc generated between a fixed contact element and a movable contact element when said contact device is open. Said contact device is provided with: a pair of fixed contact elements (111, 112) that, maintaining a specified interval, are fixed in place in an arc-extinguishing chamber (102); and the movable contact element (130), which in the arc-extinguishing chamber (102), is arranged so as to enable attachment to/removal from the pair of fixed contact elements. First arc root movement promotion sections (118b, 118c) are each formed on the pair of fixed contact elements, said first arc root movement promotion sections (118b, 118c) promoting movement of the root of the arc generated when the contact device is open, at which the movable contact element separates from the pair of fixed contact elements, in a direction away from the movable contact element. Second arc root movement promotion sections (130b, 130c) are formed on the movable contact element (130), said second arc root movement promotion sections (130b, 130c) promoting movement of the root of the arc generated when the contact device is open, at which the movable contact element separates from the pair of fixed contact elements, in a direction away from the fixed contact elements.
