The method involves identifying motion artifacts in measuring signal. The measuring signal is evaluated with respect to the arterial oxygen saturation in time intervals of the measuring signal, in which the motion artifacts exceed a predetermined limit. The motion artifacts are investigated in addition to periodically recurring signal process. The evaluation of the measuring signal with respect to the arterial oxygen saturation is suspended as long as no periodically recurring signal process is detected. The respiratory frequency is calculated from the periodicity of the signal process of the motion artifacts. An independent claim is included for a pulse oximeter with a computer.
