The support unit 1 comprises a support body which is configured to slide along an upright body 2, such as a column or post, such that the support unit is disposable at various positions, the unit being held at a particular position by use of a locating unit. The locating unit preferably comprises a counter balancing unit 6, preferably using constant force springs 30, a locking unit 7 and a retention unit 8. The retention unit may comprise a frictional O ring 51 locatable against a longitudinally extending rod 50. The locking unit may act as a brake, operated by a handle, and prevent motion along the longitudinal axis of the upright body by pressing an arm into abutment with the walls of a channel within the upright body. Also claimed is an upright body with the support unit mounted to it.
