A viewing device has a housing, a camera, a display, and a user interface. A dedicated processor correlates image pixels with physical dimensions. It uses these measurements to apply an overlay to a display to indicate the correlation. The overlay includes cursors 52, 53, 56, 57 such as vertical and horizontal grid lines displayed to touch an object image and an indication of scale of distance between lines indicating object actual physical dimensions. The processor may compensate for optical aberrations. Pixels per distance unit can be returned from a lookup table of values based on the lens focus position and a zoom lens position or digital magnification level. The user may select cursor adjustment to cause the cursors to adjust position.
