The tool (4) has a metallic base body (6) including a rear side opposing a front or working side. The base body includes a constant cross section between the front or working side and the rear side on a part of length, where the cross section is limited by lateral surfaces. A diamond-tipped tool (10) is provided on the front or working side and is inserted into a slot-like opening (8) of the base body. A projection (54) is provided on one of the lateral surfaces adjacent to the front or working side. The projection includes an abutment surface at a rear side. An independent claim is also included for a tool holder for an engraving tool for engraving a gravure cylinder.
