A system for directing multiple passenger-carrying vehicles 102, 104, 106 retains planned vehicle routes 108, 110 and periodically queries the vehicles locations. It compares a travel request from a passenger 112 with the current location and route of one or more of the vehicles, adjusts the route to accommodate the request, and sends details of the revised route to the vehicle to replace its current route. Optimal routes may be calculated according to different departure or arrival times, pick-up or set-down points or fares. The passenger can chose a more convenient but more expensive vehicle (Fig.3) or one that is more convenient to the operator and less expensive (Fig.4). Each vehicle may include a location device (e.g. GPS or Smartphone) which reports current location and receives route information via wireless telephony (e.g. EDGE, 2.5G, 3G or 4G). Vehicle locations may be used to identify congestion for updating planned routes.
