PURPOSE: A Foeniculum vulgare Miller seed extract is provided to reduce bone loss, to improve mechanical strength of bone without cytotoxicity, and to be used as a pharmaceutical product and a health food for preventing or treating osteoporosis. CONSTITUTION: A pharmaceutical composition for preventing or treating osteoporosis contains a Foeniculum vulgare Miller seed extract as an active ingredient. The extract is prepared from Foeniculum vulgare Miller seeds using water, C1-C4 alcohol, or a mixture thereof. C1-C4 alcohol is selected among methanol or ethanol. A food composition for preventing or treating osteoporosis contains the extract as an active ingredient. |
