PURPOSE: A method for inputting characters of a display device using a remote control unit and a system thereof are provided to improve user convenience as to a user input command of the remote control unit of the display device. CONSTITUTION: A remote control unit (100) generates and transmits a user command according to user input. The remote control unit supports character input by the link of a number key based on a character key region and a shortcut key based on a shortcut key region. A display device (200) displays screen and character input state according to the control of the remote control unit. The remote control unit transmits the user command for inputting a character corresponding to the shortcut key in a character group to the display device when the shortcut key based on the shortcut key region is inputted.
