PURPOSE: A pharmaceutical composition and a health food containing crude drug extract for preventing and treating depression are provided to significantly suppress oxidative stress or neurotoxicity and to prevent and treat depression and anxiety. CONSTITUTION: A pharmaceutical composition for preventing and treating depression contains extract of Cyperus rotundus L., Poria cocas(Schw.) Wolf., Glycyrrhiza ssp., and Coptis chinensis. The extract is prepared by extracting with water, low carbon number alcohol of 1-4 carbon atoms, or a mixture thereof.
