PURPOSE: An instrument and method for measuring the size of a lens are provided to automatically measure the size and outline position of the lens using a filer at a glasses lens processing machine. CONSTITUTION: An instrument for measuring the size of a lens (10) includes a clamp (20), a clamp driving part (22), a filler (30), a filler driving/detecting part (32), and a calculation/control part (40). The clamp fixes the lens, and functions as a rotating and moving shaft for rotating and moving the lens. The clamp driving part is coupled to the clamp, and rotates or linearly moves the lens fixed to the clamp. The filler closely applies certain pressure on the lens, and continuously moves along the surface curvature of the lens according to the movement of the lens. The continuously moving filler discontinuously moves with the pressure on the lens toward the position of the lens when the lens is separated from the same. The filler closely adheres to the lens with a driving force from the filler driving/detecting part. The filler driving/detecting part detects the movement of the filler, and detects whether or not the filler adheres to or is separated from the lens. The calculation/control part controls the clamp driving part in order to rotate or linearly move the clamp and the lens.
