The method involves determining performance of an internal combustion engine by estimating operation parameters of the internal combustion engine. An internal gas recirculation (IGR) amount of the internal combustion engine is estimated, and a correction factor is established (4) from a base (R) indicating the performance of the internal combustion engine. The performance of the internal combustion engine is corrected according to the correction factor. The recirculation amount of the internal combustion engine is varied using a phase-shifting device that is provided with camshafts. An independent claim is also included for a system for controlling an internal combustion engine.
