PURPOSE: An apparatus and a method for controlling lighting in a lighting device using light emitting diodes (LED) are provided to determine a number of lighting LED depending on the brightness of the surrounding, thereby minimizing the number of lighting LED. CONSTITUTION: A pattern generator (1) produces multiple symmetrical patterns. The multiple symmetrical patterns is symmetric vertically and horizontally. A control unit (2) determines a number of lighting LED depending on the brightness of the surrounding. The control unit controls the symmetrical pattern to alternately turn on LED.
