PURPOSE: An automatic update system for a program of a vehicle electronic control unit and a method thereof are provided to prevent the inconvenience of visiting a service center for updating the program for operational control. CONSTITUTION: An input unit(140) receives an update command for a program from a user. A communication unit(150) is wirelessly connected with a service control center to receive update information on the program from the service control center. The communication unit transmits the update command to the service control center to receive data on the program update from the service control center. An output unit(160) displays the update information to the user. A wakeup unit(130) wakes up an electronic control unit to receive the update information from the service control center.
