PURPOSE: An apparatus for checking a memory of an electronic power steering (EPS) system and a method thereof are provided to shorten required time when determining the validity of the memory. CONSTITUTION: An EPS memory is checked using an error correcting code (ECC) when operating an EPS system (S110). If a memory error is detected as a checked result of the memory (S120), information about an error is stored in an external electrically erasable and programmable read only memory (EEPROM) (S130). If information about the error is stored in the external EEPROM, the EPS system is reset (S140). If the EPS system is reset, the EPS memory is checked again using the ECC. If the memory error is not detected, the EPS is normally operated (S150).
