The method involves directly heating a storage material (4) in a containment (1) of a closed nuclear power plant through the electric energy. The heat of the storage material inside the containment is used to generate steam. The energy outside the containment is converted into electrical energy by a steam turbine (9) and an associated generator (11) of the closed nuclear power plant. The storage material is directly heated by an electrical resistance heater (3), where the storage material has a bed of gravel, sand and crushed steel portions. An independent claim is included for an apparatus for the thermal storage of electric energy, with a heat exchanger in the containment that is provided with a heat insulating layer.
