A video display device comprises a light source, a display element, an illumination prism, and an ocular optical assembly. The light source emits an illumination light. The display element modulates the illumination light and emits same as a video light. The illumination light which is emitted from the light source enters the illumination prism. An emission face emits the illumination light toward the display element. A reflection face reflects to the emission face the illumination light which enters from an input face. The ocular optical assembly transmits the video light which is emitted from the display element. The illumination prism forms an image of the light source in an arbitrary first plane which includes a center light beam which is closer to a display element side than an ocular plane. The illumination prism forms an image of the light source in a second plane either in the ocular plane or near the ocular plane. |
