The tube (2) has an emitter and an anode (12) generating an electron beam in operation, where the electron beam forms a focal spot on the anode. A control electrode (6) and a control unit (14) controls electron beam current. An arrangement of electrodes is positioned as an electrical diversion and focusing system (10) between the emitter and the anode. The control electrode comprises a diaphragm type central aperture. The emitter partially projects into the central aperture of the control electrode and provided as a curved emitter, a cylindrical emitter and a helical emitter. An independent claim is also included for a method for operating an X-ray tube.
