The illumination device (1) has a power supply (5) with an actuator for adjusting operating current of semiconductor laser (2) in semiconductor chip. The temperature sensors (14A-14D) detect temperature of semiconductor chip. A data memory (16) stores respective operating current value of semiconductor laser which produces optical radiation of preset intensity, for temperature values. The actuator is connected to temperature sensors and data memory to control operating current of semiconductor laser according to measured temperature and stored operating current values.
