A method of removing dissolved salts from seawater to render it palatable comprises treating the water simultaneously with silver oxide and a hydrogen-ion-exchange material and then filtering it. The hydrogen-ion-exchange material preferably contains not more than .8 equivalents of exchangeable hydrogen for each equivalent of silver oxide. Barium oxide or barium hydroxide may also be added to the water for the purpose of removing dissolved sulphates. A briquette for use in the method comprises silver oxide, a hydrogen-ion-exchange material and a dissolving agent, for example, wilkinite. It may also contain activated carbon. Specification 590,217 is referred to. |
