The invention relates to a magnetic actuator (7) for producing a linear movement, consisting of a hollow cylindrical closed housing which represents a yoke (1), and comprising a central passage (8) on each end face and a bipartite armature with an external and an internal armature (21, 22), the external armature (21) being designed integrally with a central lifting rod (9) which is guided on each end face of the housing in the passage (8), and the internal armature (22), which surrounds the external armature (21) in annular manner in a region of the housing, having an internal cross-section such that the internal armature (22) can be displaced axially relative to the external armature (21) between stops, each stop serving to determine a stable position between the external armature (21) and the yoke (1), and permanent magnets (5) being arranged on the external perimeter of the internal armature (22), and upper and lower actuator coils (3, 4) each for generating a magnetic field for displacing the armature in a particular direction, and the lifting rod (9) being connected on one side with a system, for example a medium voltage switchgear system, to be switched for placement in a bistable position in the housing of the magnetic actuator (7).
