PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To achieve efficient utilization of communication resources by appropriate handoff of a data attachment point associated with the handoff of an access terminal.SOLUTION: In a communication system, a gateway entity 32 is linked to a plurality of infrastructure entities 34 and 36 and an access terminal 44 establishes a data attachment point (DAP) with one of the infrastructure entities 34 and 36 to communicate with it. The access terminal 44 determines to initiate the handoff of the DAP associated with the handoff of the access terminal 44 between infrastructure entities 34 and 36 by weighing factors such as the link conditions with the various infrastructure entities, the time since the last DAP handoff, and time duration communicating with the current infrastructure entity before proceeding with the DAP handoff. |
