The device (1a) has a charge carrier generating unit (2) for generating charge carriers i.e. electrons, and an acceleration device (4) for accelerating the generated charger carriers within an enclosed chamber (8), where the charge carriers emerges from the chamber through an exit element (6) i.e. exit window. A control device monitors an operation of the device. The control device comprises an image pickup device (22) i.e. camera, which is arranged such that the image pickup device receives an image of an exit region (A) in which the charge carrier emerges from the chamber. An independent claim is also included for a method for sterilizing containers.
