USER AUTHENTICATION IN A NETWORK ACCESS SYSTEM

A system and method for controlling access to a network service or resource by a wireless client device is described. One embodiment of a system comprises a network access point, a client device coupled to the network access point, a network access controller operable to perform MAC authentication of the client device, and a DHCP server coupled to the network access controller via a communication channel, the DHCP server operable to allocate a lease for a network address to the client device after receiving a notification from the network access controller to indicate that MAC authentication of the client device has been completed. Other systems and methods are also described for controlling access and for registering a computing device for automatic MAC authentication by a network access controller in a network access system.
