A method for forming a cathode of a wet electrolytic capacitor; the method comprising blasting a metal substrate with a plurality of abrasive particles to form a micro-roughened surface having a plurality of pits; contacting the micro-roughened surface of the metal substrate with an extraction solution, where the abrasive particles are dispersed in the extraction solution; and forming a conductive coating on the micro-roughened surface. Also disclosed is a wet electrolytic capacitor that includes a porous anode body containing a dielectric layer, an electrolyte, and the above described cathode, where the cathode surface contains less than 15% of abrasive particles, preferably between 0.05% and 10% abrasive particles. The abrasive particles may be manganese dioxide and may have an average size of 25 to 200 µm. The blasting pressure is around 10 to 35 pounds per square inch and the blasting occurs for a time of 10 to 30 seconds. The extraction solution preferably contains water, more preferably containing a solution of an inorganic acid, inorganic base or both.
|
