[Class 97 (ii)] An indicating and recording device for the direction of the air stream adjacent to an aircraft comprises a vane pivoted about two axes normal to one another. A hollow shaft 12 projecting from the fuselage 14 has secured to it a vane 11 the movements of which about the axis of the shaft 12 are indicated by a pointer 20 and scale 21 and recorded by a pen 24 on a travelling band 25 the pen being operated by a rack 23 and a pinion 22 on the shaft 12. The vane 11 is also connected to a rod 30 slidable in the hollow shaft by a link 31, lever 32 pivoted to cheeks 29 carried by the shaft 12, one end of which lever 32 is linked by link 34 to a lug 35 on the vane so that movements about an axis normal to that of the shaft 12 produce an endwise movement of the rod 30. This endwise movement is converted into a rotary movement by helix and nut to rotate a pointer 38 against the scale 21 and also by rack 39 and pinion 40, shaft 41, pinion 43 and rack 44 operates a pen 45 to record the movement of the travelling band 25.
