An air to liquid heat exchanger is disclosed having a heat exchanger block having a number of air flow fin heat transfer units 61, 81 through which air to be cooled passes. Each of the air flow fin heat transfer units 61, 81 has a number of non-uniform flow area airflow passages each of which reduces in air flow area from an air inlet end 15a, 85a of the heat exchanger block 15 to an air outlet end 15b, 85b of the heat exchanger block. Each air flow heat transfer unit 61, 81 includes a tapered triangular shaped central zone 64, 84 defined by two inner boundary fins 62c, 82c which diverge away from each other from an air inlet end of the heat exchanger such that the area of the air inlet end 15a, 85a is larger than the air outlet end 15b, 85b . The tapered triangular shaped central zone 64, 84 thus reduces the air flow area at the air outlet end 15b, 85b of the heat exchanger block without significantly reducing the air flow area at the air inlet end 15a, 15a of the heat exchanger block and provides for the passage of common liquid coolant supply and return conduits 50S, 70S and 50R, 70R through each air flow heat transfer unit 61, 81. The heat exchanger may be used to cool intake air which is passed to an internal combustion engine through a turbo charger compressor. |
