PURPOSE: A biosensor for detecting phenol compounds is provided to largely improve sensitivity and reactivity to phenol compounds in a lignin hydrolysate. CONSTITUTION: A method for detecting phenol compounds in a lignin hydrolysate comprises the steps of: transforming a vector containing an aaeXAB promoter region (sequence number 1) and a reporter gene to E.coli DH5alpha; exposing the transformed strain to a sample containing the lignin hydrolysate; and measuring the expression level of the reporter gene in the transformed strain. The reporter gene is operatively linked to the promoter region. A biosensor for detecting the phenol compounds in the lignin hydrolysate comprises the transformed strain.
