PURPOSE: An exhaust gas purification system and a method thereof are provided to generate ammonia(NH_3) and to remove nitrogen oxide(NO_X) by using hydrocarbon(HC). CONSTITUTION: An exhaust gas purification system includes a hydrocarbon adsorption catalyst(30), a three-way catalytic converter(40), and a selective reduction catalyst(50). The hydrocarbon adsorption catalyst adsorbs or desorbs hydrocarbon according to the temperature of the hydrocarbon which is contained in exhaust gas. The three-way catalytic converter makes the exhaust gas, which includes hydrocarbon which is desorbed from the hydrocarbon adsorption catalyst, to be oxidized-reduced. The selective reduction catalyst adsorbs or desorbs ammonia according to the temperature of the ammonia which is discharged from the three-way catalytic converter, and uses the desorbed ammonia to reduce nitrogen oxide.
