The device has a processor (109) for selecting a detection configuration comprising a transmit antenna and a receiving antenna. A loss detector (107) detects a loss value based on a transmit signal and a receive signal when another detection configuration is selected to transmit the transmit signal. The detector detects another loss value based on the transmit signal and the receive signal when the former detection configuration is selected to transmit the transmit signal. The processor selects the detection configuration having a lower loss value to detect a blood count parameter. An independent claim is also included for a method for detecting a blood count parameter in a blood vessel.
