PURPOSE: A device and method for recognizing a hand shape using a finger pattern are provided to compute an edge by pixel line inside an image, to detect finger feature data using a predetermined feature reference value, and to output a result from recognizing the hand shape using a detected finger candidate pattern, thereby reducing used data throughput and quickly recognizing the hand shape. CONSTITUTION: A device for recognizing a hand shape includes a memory part (30) and a control part (10). The memory part stores a finger pattern predetermined by at least one hand shape. The control part computes an edge by pixel line inside an inputted image, and detects data for finger feature data according to a predetermined feature reference value using the computed edge. After detecting a finger candidate pattern using the detected finger feature data, the control part outputs a result from recognizing the hand shape corresponding to the finger pattern coincident with the detected finger candidate pattern among the finger patterns in the memory part.
