PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image pickup device which can smoothly switch from stereoscopic vision display to two-dimensional image display and a control method thereof.SOLUTION: The image pickup device comprises an image sensor 105 composed to have a plurality of photodiodes for a microlens constituting each pixel unit. A first PD selection-synthesis unit 106 has a right eye selection-synthesis mode and a left eye selection-synthesis mode in which outputs of the plurality of photodiodes are selected and synthesized, and a nonselection-synthesis mode which is set in 2D display control. A CPU 109 determines which operation to perform among 3D display control, 2D display switchover preparatory processing and 2D display control depending on camera manipulation or camera state. In preparatory processing for transition from 3D display to 2D display, the CPU 109 generates 2-dimensional display image data from right-eye or left-eye image data, and when switching over to 2D display, controls the display of the generated image data and also controls a subsequent image data generation process. |
