PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image generation method for increasing the visibility of an object while preventing the object from disappearing in an area where the image pickup ranges of a plurality of cameras are overlapped in an output image generated on the basis of a plurality of input images picked up by the plurality of cameras.SOLUTION: An image generation method for generating an output image on the basis of input images respectively picked up by a rear camera 2B and a right side camera 2R mounted on a shovel 60 includes: respectively arranging input image sections of two cameras corresponding to an overlapping area where image pickup ranges of the two cameras are overlapped, such that each of those input image sections can form a fringe pattern in an output image; detecting an edge in an image section corresponding to the overlapping area in the output image; determining whether or not the edge belongs to an image of a solid object on the basis of the arrangement of the edge; detecting a solid object image area on the basis of the arrangement of the edge determined to belong to the image of the solid object: and controlling the display configurations of the solid object image area.
