PURPOSE: An apparatus for detecting a steam volume and a method thereof are provided to resolve the problem of measuring a steam volume which is generated in a gasifier when a steam drum of a coal gasification plant is designed. CONSTITUTION: A densitometer (D) measures the density of the exit cooling water/steam of a gasifier (10). A flow meter (F) measures the mass flow of cooling water supplied to a membrane well tube of the gasifier. A calculation unit measures the volume of steam which is generated from the gasifier based on the measured density and mass flow. The gasifier generates synthetic gas by gasifying coal. A cooling device cools the synthetic gas which is generated in the gasifier. A steam drum (100) receives cooling water/steam generated by cooling water which is supplied to the gasifier and the cooling device. [Reference numerals] (AA) Steam
