PURPOSE: A protection switching method in an Ethernet ring network is provided to selectively flush a Filtering DataBase (FDB) or to partially flush the address of an FDB in the case of a failure in an Ethernet ring by considering whether the link where the failure occurs influences data transmission. CONSTITUTION: A first node in a ring network detects a link failure (110). The first node determines whether a port which transmits a protection switching message is a port on a forwarding path (120). The first node generates a protection switching message based on the determination (130, 140). If the port is not on the forwarding path, the first node sets a Do Not Flush (DNF) bit of the protection switching message. The first node transmits the generated protection switching message (150).
