Contemplated is a probe for extraction of sub soil samples that collects samples at variable depths, in variable quantities, and provides the option of collecting variable sized particles. The probe comprises: a tubular Auger sleeve that houses a hardened steel tipped Auger drill; an elongated slot in said sleeve that serves as a discharge aperture to facilitate displacement of both redundant waste material and soil or such other material that is intended for retention; means to automatically sieve the material discharged from the discharge aperture through a novel vibration technique; a container of variable size to collect the sifted material; and means to seal the container in order to reduce the prospect of contamination, particularly through handling, if chemical analysis is later required. Optionally contemplated is the provision of a range of replaceable drill bits, sieves and sample collection containers suit a wide range of different collection applications and needs. .. . . .. . . . . . . . . . . .. .... ........ ........................ ...
