Provided is an industrially suitable process for producing a hydroxyalkylated polyrotaxane. The process for producing a hydroxyalkylated polyrotaxane comprises reacting a polyrotaxane which comprises hydroxylated cyclic molecules, a linear molecule that pierces the cyclic molecules and has been clathrated therewith, and blocking groups disposed at both terminals of the linear molecule so as not to release the cyclic molecules from the linear molecule, with a cyclic ether represented by general formula (1) in the presence of water and an organic base.
