MULTIFUNCTIONAL NANOPARTICLES

Multifunctional nanoparticles can include two or more different populations of nanocrystals that impart a combination of properties arising from the constituent populations in a single, multifunctional nanoparticle. Uniform multifunction nanoparticles having a narrow size distribution can be prepared by a simple method. The multifunctional nanoparticles include nanoparticles from two or more starting populations of nanoparticles which have different properties that may not be available in a single starting population of nanoparticles. For example, a magneto-fluorescent nanoparticle can include both highly luminescent semiconductor nanocrystals which emit light at a desired wavelength, and magnetic nanoparticles; or a multicolor nanoparticle can include semiconductor nanocrystals that emit light at two or more desired wavelengths.
