PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide: a pigment composition including as a principal ingredient, C.I. Pigment Red 177 having a specific surface area that is appropriate for a color filter application to provide a color filter having a high lightness and a high contrast ratio; and a method of manufacturing the same.SOLUTION: A method of manufacturing a pigment composition whose specific surface area is 60-100 m2/g, comprises: mechanically kneading a mixture of C.I. Pigment Red 177, a specific quinophthalone compound, and a specific thiazine compound in the existence of water-soluble inorganic salts or the water-soluble inorganic salts and a solvent.
