A method and an apparatus for communication between a home gateway and a cloud server are disclosed in the embodiments of the present invention. The cloud server has a home gateway software running unit, and the home gateway software running unit sets various software modules. The method comprises: the cloud server establishes a data communication channel with the home gateway using the TCP/IP protocol, and the home gateway connects with a terminal using a short-range communication protocol; the home gateway software running unit transmits a first software message to the home gateway through the data communication channel, thereby enabling the home gateway to forward the first software message to a first terminal to which the first software message is directed; alternatively, the home gateway software running unit receives a second software message from the home gateway through the data communication channel, and a second short-range communication message is transmitted to the home gateway by a second terminal, and is forwarded to the cloud server via the home gateway.
