A process for producing a low endotoxin alkali chitosan comprises contacting chitosan with an alkali solution to form a mixture and leaving the mixture for at least about 12 hours. Preferably, the alkali solution is from 0.01M to 1M and may be selected from sodium hydroxide, potassium hydroxide, or sodium carbonate. The mixture may be left for between two to four weeks. The mixture may also contain a preservative selected from silver ions, zinc ions, or chlorohexadine. The process may comprise a further step of drying the mixture in an oven. The alkali chitosan may be subsequently treated with an acid to form a neutral chitosan. Alkali chitosan, neutral chitosan, chitosan salts, and other derivatives each comprising an endotoxin concentration of less than 100 EU/g are also disclosed. The chitosan salt may be used to step blood flow and may be incorporated into a wound dressing. |
