The invention relates to a modular camera comprising: a sensor module comprising an image sensor configured to capture image data an a first module interface, the first module comprising a mating portion and an electrical coupling portion; and a plurality of further modules each and functionally engageable with the sensor module and with each of the other of plurality of further modules, each of the modules comprising: a first interface, comprising a mating portion and an electrical coupling portion, the mating portion of the first interface releasably mechanically matable with the mating portion of the first module interface and the electrical coupling portion of the first interface electrically couplable with the electrical coupling mating portion of the first module interface so as to communicate signals between the sensor module and the module; a second interface, comprising a mating portion and an electrical coupling portion, the mating portion of the second interface releasably mechanically matable with the mating portion of the first interface of each of the other of the plurality of modules and the electrical coupling portion of the second interface configured to be electrically couplable with the electrical coupling portion of the first interface of each of the other of the plurality of modules; and a bus segment for communicating signals between the first interface and the second interface; wherein each of the further modules is associated with at least one upgraded technology module providing an upgrade capability for that module by removing the module from the camera and replacing it with the upgraded technology module, and wherein the sensor module is selected fro at least first and second sensor modules with different sensor sizes. |
