The battery system has several battery elements (Zi) that are connected in series. One battery element is connected with another battery element through an autonomous active charge equalization unit (402). Each pair of adjacent battery element is connected to the autonomous active charge equalization unit. An inductor, two switching elements and a logical switching unit are provided in the autonomous active charge equalization unit. The logical switching unit is provided with logical AND gate and OR gate. An oscillator is connected to one of the inputs of logic circuit unit. An independent claim is included for a method of performing charging equalization on serially-connected battery elements.
