The information display system has a virtual input zone (130), a photo-mixing detector camera for monitoring the input region and an evaluation unit. The evaluation unit is so configured that a gesture is detected only as input in the virtual input region, when the gesture takes place within a defined space region. The virtual input zone extends in a space region above the steering wheel (220). The photo-mixing detector camera is arranged in the area of a cockpit (210) of a vehicle. An independent claim is included for a method for operating an information display system.
