The present invention relates to a method of performing planar chromatography comprising loading one or more samples onto a planar stationary phase and while retaining said one or more samples on the planar stationary phase, subjecting said one or more samples to planar chromatography using a mobile phase; wherein the chromatography is performed with a gradient elution of the mobile phase and is repeated at least twice with progressively decreasing migration distances of the mobile phase on the planar chromatography plate, wherein said gradient elution comprises increasing the elution strength of the mobile phase between two subsequent chromatography steps, said steps being performed on the same planar chromatography plate.
