[Class 119] [Also in Groups VI and XV] A pneumatic device which may be incorporated in hunting weapons is characterised by the interposition between the compressed air supply and the projecting barrel or part thereof of at least one flexible disc or diaphragm provided with a hole of smaller diameter than that of the projectile to be thrown. The device in its simplest form comprises a breech member 1 provided with a conical recess 2 communicating with a firing chamber 3 of sufficient size to take one projectile P. Across the firing chamber is stretched a rubber diaphragm 4 provided with a hole 4a of smaller diameter than the projectile P, said diaphragm being held between a disc 5 and a ring 6. All these parts are held in position by the barrel tube 7 or part thereof. If the diaphragm is of sufficient strength a gun incorporating the device may be used for hunting, Fig. 17. The firing chamber 73 is constituted in a member 72 in front of which the resilient diaphragm 74 is located and held in position by the tube or barrel 70. The projectiles 76 are contained in a chamber 75 which communicates by passages 77 normally closed by a valve 78 with a compression chamber 79. This latter communicates by a passage 81 provided with a non-return valve 82 with the cylinder 80 of a pump. A piston 83 slides in the cylinder 80 and is fast on a movable rod 84 extending out of the butt 85 and carrying a butt-plate. The valve 78 carries a button 90 which is moved by the conical end of rod 91, thus lifting valve 78 from its seat. The rod 91 is formed with a push-button 92 and is normally held retracted by a spring 93. To load the gun it is tilted forwardly to roll a projectile 94 into the chamber 73. The butt plate is brought to the shoulder and the butt moved to it sufficient times to deliver compressed air into the chamber 79. After taking aim, the button 92 is pressed releasing the compressed air through the passages 77 into the chamber 73, forcing the projectile 94 suddenly through the hole 95 in the diaphragm 74. The gun may be modified by employing up to three resilient diaphragms together with three non-resilient washers in different combinations to graduate the resistance to the passage of the projectile. In a further modification the projectiles are stored in a magazine rotatable in a plane perpendicular to the axis of the barrel. A pistol incorporating the pneumatic device is also described (see Group XV), said pistol being operated by hand pressure on a bulb in the butt.
