PURPOSE: A composition containing diphlorethohydroxycarmalol compounds as active ingredients for protecting nerve cells is provided to prevent or treat brain diseases caused by glutamate neurotoxicity and to be used in functional foods for treating brain diseases. CONSTITUTION: A composition for protecting nerve cells contains diphlorethohydroxycarmalol compounds of chemical formula as active ingredients. The compound is derived from Ishigeaceae plants. The compound suppresses neurotoxicity caused by glutamate and activation of microglial cells. The compound prevents or treats brain diseases caused by glutamate neurotoxicity.
