An apparatus and method of adjusting at least one transponder laser in a Wavelength Division Multiplexed grid is described. A first signal at a first wavelength is provided using a first transponder laser. A second signal at a second wavelength is provided using a second transponder laser. The second wavelength is adjacent to the first wavelength in the grid. The second signal is modulated in order to produce a third signal at a predetermined spectral distance from the second signal, such that the spectral distance between the third signal and the first signal is shorter than the spectral distance between the second signal and the first signal. Using the position of the third signal, the spectral distance between the first signal and the second signal is determined. Finally, the wavelength of the second laser is adjusted such that the spectral distance between the first signal and the second signal is within a predetermined range.
