PURPOSE: A technique for sorting empty capsules during alginate capsulation of Langerhans islets is provided to sort empty capsules and cell-containing capsules. CONSTITUTION: A technique for sorting empty capsules comprises the steps of: encapsulating pig Langerhans islets with alginate; and centrifuging the prepared capsules in 15 % ficol solution (1.054g/ml) at 1300 x g for three minutes or in 20 % ficol solution (1.071g/ml) at 1300 x g for three minutes.
