A fault current limiter of the quenching superconductor type has a solid material in contact with the superconductor or in contact with a thin metal film coating the superconductor. The solid material is electrically insulating. When the superconductor quenches and heats up, following a fault, the solid material melts to form an ionic liquid, which is electrically conducting, thus creating new electrically conducting pathways. The invention reduces hot spots in the superconductor and reduces local temperature rise. |
