PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a high efficient optical unit which has the number of components reduced and reduces speckles, and an image display device including the optical unit. SOLUTION: The optical unit comprises one or more coherent light sources 1 for emitting coherent light and a light transmission means for projecting emitted light obtained from the coherent light sources 1 onto an image display element 4. The light transmission means includes an optical path changing means 2, and the optical path changing means includes optical elements 2a and 2b having polarization dependence and a diffusing function and a driving means which moves or deforms the optical elements so as to reduce speckles.
